Taxi drivers request fuel price relief amid rising energy costs

Taxi drivers and ride-hailing operators are calling for government support to offset rising fuel prices, which have increased due to ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

The request comes amid broader pressure on transport professionals, following similar appeals from fishermen, farmers, and truck drivers affected by higher energy costs. Industry representatives argue that the rising price of fuel is putting significant strain on their businesses and threatening essential services, particularly medical transport for hospital patients.

A meeting between taxi representatives and France’s Ministry of Transport is scheduled for Friday afternoon in Paris, following earlier discussions with ride-hailing (VTC) operators held the same day.

The National Taxi Union has called for the sector to be included in fuel subsidy schemes, alongside other professions considered essential. Union representatives are also requesting a cap on fuel prices and a freeze on certain fuel-related taxes, which they say have significantly increased in recent months.

Transport associations argue that without government intervention, many drivers will struggle to maintain operations, especially in rural areas where taxis play a crucial role in providing mobility and healthcare access.

The issue highlights growing concerns over inflation in the transport sector and the broader economic impact of global energy price fluctuations.
