Tangier welcomes African Parliamentary delegation to strengthen South-South cooperation
An African parliamentary delegation visited Tangier on Thursday as part of the inaugural Interactive Seminar of the Parliamentary Diplomacy and South-South Dialogue Platform, highlighting the Moroccan city's growing role in regional cooperation, local governance and international engagement.
The visit aimed to showcase Tangier's historical, cultural and urban development while reinforcing partnerships between Moroccan institutions and parliamentary representatives from across Africa.
Focus on parliamentary diplomacy and regional cooperation
The delegation, made up of representatives from several African senates and parliaments, was welcomed by Mounir Laymouri, President of the Tangier Communal Council.
During the meeting, local officials presented the city's strategy for strengthening ties with African municipalities through decentralized cooperation and knowledge sharing.
Laymouri emphasized Tangier's commitment to fostering solidarity with African cities and promoting partnerships that support sustainable urban development and institutional collaboration.
Tangier strengthens international profile
Municipal officials highlighted Tangier's growing reputation as a venue for major international events and regional dialogue.
In recent years, the city has hosted the World Congress of United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG), as well as meetings of the Executive Bureau of UCLG Africa and several Mediterranean, Arab and Francophone municipal networks.
These events have reinforced Tangier's position as an important platform for international cooperation and local governance initiatives.
Commitment to African development
Tangier also plays an active role in the African Fund for Support to International Decentralized Cooperation, contributing to development projects benefiting cities across the continent.
The municipality continues to promote exchanges of expertise with African partners in key areas including:
- Local governance
- Urban development
- Culture
- Tourism
- Digital governance
Officials say these initiatives are designed to strengthen institutional capacity while encouraging closer collaboration between local authorities throughout Africa.
Promoting South-South partnerships
The parliamentary visit reflects Morocco's broader commitment to expanding South-South cooperation and enhancing dialogue with African partners through parliamentary and local government diplomacy.
By showcasing Tangier's development model and international partnerships, the city aims to deepen collaboration with African institutions and contribute to shared economic, cultural and governance objectives across the continent.
