Taiwan reports rising military pressure as China promotes peace dialogue

Taiwan has raised concerns over an increase in Chinese military activity near the island, highlighting a growing contrast between Beijing’s diplomatic messaging and its actions on the ground.

Officials in Taipei report that Chinese warships and aircraft have intensified their presence in recent weeks, maintaining near-daily operations around Taiwan. This buildup is viewed by the government as a sign of mounting pressure, despite China’s parallel efforts to present itself as open to dialogue.

At the same time, Beijing has been engaging with members of Taiwan’s opposition, promoting discussions framed around peace and cooperation. This dual approach—military presence alongside diplomatic outreach—has heightened unease among Taiwanese authorities.

Wellington Koo warned lawmakers that China continues to expand its military capabilities, making the threat to Taiwan increasingly serious. He stressed the importance of demonstrating strong self-defense commitments, particularly to international partners.

The situation is further complicated by internal political divisions in Taiwan. Disagreements within parliament have delayed decisions on increasing defense spending, a move encouraged by key allies such as the United States.

The broader geopolitical context also plays a role. With Washington focused on other global challenges and a potential meeting expected between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping, Taiwan’s leaders are closely monitoring international support.
