Syria:two killed as authorities disperse Alawite protests

Two people were killed on Sunday as Syrian security forces dispersed demonstrations organized by members of the Alawite community, according to a human rights organization and a medical source.

The protests erupted after a deadly attack on a mosque in the central city of Homs that targeted the Alawite minority and left eight people dead. Thousands of demonstrators took to the streets in several cities, including the coastal city of Latakia, demanding an end to what they described as ongoing violence against their community.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that security forces opened fire while breaking up a gathering in Latakia. A local hospital confirmed receiving two bodies. Syrian authorities have not acknowledged using live ammunition, stating instead that the situation was brought under control and accusing supporters of former president Bashar al-Assad of attacking security personnel.

Clashes were also reported in Homs, where several people were injured. Community leaders condemned what they called a serious violation of freedom of expression and urged protesters to remain calm and avoid further escalation.

The Alawite minority, from which former president Assad originates, has faced repeated attacks since an Islamist coalition took power in Damascus in late 2024. Demonstrators also called for greater political autonomy and the release of detained members of their community.
