Spain experienced a significant influx of Moroccan immigrants during the first quarter of the year, according to data released by the Spanish National Statistics Institute (INE). During this period, 26,000 Moroccans emigrated to Spain, making them the second-largest immigrant group after Colombians (39,200), and ahead of Venezuelans (22,600).

However, migration was not one-way, as 9,900 Moroccan nationals also left Spain, along with 10,000 Spaniards and 8,000 Romanians. This ebb and flow of migration contributed to a dynamic demographic landscape within the Iberian nation.

The INE report also noted that the Spanish-born population decreased by 3,338 individuals in the first quarter, while the foreign-born population increased by 85,684. As of April 1st, 2024, 18.31% of Spain's residents, or 8,915,831 people, were born outside the country. It's worth noting that the acquisition of Spanish nationality through naturalization has reduced the official count of foreign nationals to 6,581,028.

With these demographic changes, Spain's total population grew by 82,346 people, reaching a total of 48,692,804 inhabitants as of April 1st, 2024.

The surge in Moroccan immigration to Spain highlights the impact of migration on the nation's demographic composition, providing a glimpse into the evolving tapestry of diversity that continues to shape Spain's sociocultural landscape.
