Strengthening Parliamentary Cooperation: Morocco and Mexico's Dialogue

A Moroccan parliamentary delegation held discussions in Mexico City with several Mexican officials on enhancing parliamentary cooperation and coordination on matters of shared interest.

These talks took place on the sidelines of the participation of Moroccan parliamentarians in the World Conference of Women Parliamentarians of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), held in the Mexican capital.

The Moroccan delegation included Laila Ahl Sidi Mouloud, a member of the Rassemblement National des Indépendants (RNI), Nadia Benzedfa from the Parti Authenticité et Modernité (PAM), Aicha El Karji from the Union Socialiste des Forces Populaires (USFP), and Hind El Ghazali, a counselor from the RNI.

The meetings offered an opportunity to highlight Morocco’s experience in promoting women’s representation within legislative and political institutions, as well as the importance of parliamentary dialogue in strengthening legislative partnerships and defending shared interests.

The delegation met with Alejandro Murat Hinojosa, president of the Senate’s foreign relations committee, and Martha Elena Patricio, president of the gender equality committee in the Chamber of Deputies. They also engaged with deputy Cynthia López Castro, head of the Women’s Parliamentary Bureau, and deputy Anahí González Hernández to discuss ways to enhance the presence of women in legislative bodies and share experiences on laws and initiatives supporting women's political participation.

The talks also underscored Morocco’s reforms aimed at strengthening women’s representation, including the inclusion of gender parity in Article 19 of the Constitution, and the role of women in the current government, where they hold seven out of 23 ministerial portfolios.

Furthermore, the Moroccan delegation commended Mexico’s progress in this area, particularly after the election of Claudia Sheinbaum as the country’s first female president, along with advancements in gender parity in the federal congress and local governments, reflecting significant strides in boosting women’s political participation.

The discussions also covered topics such as renewable energy and migration challenges, given the shared positions of both countries as major transit points for migrants.
