Stellantis to end car production at poissy plant by 2029

Automotive group Stellantis NV has announced that it will stop producing new vehicles at its Poissy plant near Paris by 2029, as part of a broader strategy to reduce excess manufacturing capacity in Europe.

The company, which owns brands such as Jeep and Peugeot, is facing structural overcapacity across the region, where vehicle demand has still not returned to pre-pandemic levels. This imbalance has placed additional pressure on production planning and long-term investment decisions.

The situation has been further complicated by increased competition from low-cost Chinese manufacturers and a slower-than-expected transition to electric vehicles. Earlier this year, Stellantis recorded significant financial write-downs linked to these market challenges.

Production of models such as the DS3 and Opel Mokka is expected to end at the Poissy site by late 2028. After that, the facility will no longer assemble new vehicles but will continue to operate in other industrial capacities, including the production of components for other Stellantis plants.

The company also plans to invest around €100 million to transform the site into a more diversified industrial hub. Future activities may include 3D printing for automotive parts as well as vehicle reconditioning and recycling operations.

While the decision marks a major shift for the historic factory, Stellantis has emphasized that the transition is part of its long-term adaptation strategy to changing market conditions and industrial transformation in the automotive sector.
