Spain closes airspace to U.S. aircraft involved in Iran conflict
The Spanish government has closed its airspace to U.S. aircraft involved in the ongoing conflict against Iran, according to Defense Minister Margarita Robles. Spain’s left-leaning government has expressed strong opposition to U.S.-Israeli military actions in the region.
Robles clarified that the use of U.S. bases in Spain for operations linked to the Iran conflict is also prohibited. In practice, this decision has forced some American bombers to reroute around the Iberian Peninsula, entering the Middle East via the Strait of Gibraltar, complicating logistics and flight plans. An exception exists for emergencies, allowing transit or landing if necessary.
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has condemned the war as “illegal” and “a major mistake,” prompting criticism from U.S. President Donald Trump, who threatened to halt bilateral trade in response to Spain’s refusal to allow use of its military bases in Rota and Morón. Despite the current restrictions, existing missions under the bilateral agreement with Washington remain operational.
