South Korea seeks deeper NATO defence industry partnership through joint innovation

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has called for a broader defence industry partnership with NATO allies, proposing expanded cooperation in advanced technology research, weapons development and joint production programmes.

Speaking at the NATO Summit's Defence Industry Forum in Ankara, Lee said South Korea aims to move beyond traditional arms exchanges and establish a more comprehensive framework of collaboration with the military alliance.

The South Korean leader proposed upgrading existing defence ties into what he described as a “South Korea-NATO defence industry partnership 2.0”, a model focused on deeper cooperation across the entire defence technology ecosystem.

Under the proposed approach, cooperation would extend beyond the purchase and sale of military equipment to include joint research and development, collaborative manufacturing and coordinated operation of weapons systems. Lee highlighted the importance of working together on cutting-edge technologies as security challenges become increasingly complex.

South Korea has developed a growing defence industry presence in recent years, expanding its role as a major supplier of military equipment to international markets. The country has sought to strengthen partnerships with strategic allies while improving technological capabilities and production capacity.

The proposed cooperation with NATO members reflects Seoul's ambition to become a more active contributor to global security networks. Joint innovation initiatives could provide opportunities for both sides to share expertise, strengthen supply chains and accelerate the development of next-generation defence systems.

Lee's remarks come as NATO and partner countries continue to explore closer industrial cooperation amid rising demand for advanced military capabilities. Defence production, technological independence and supply chain resilience have become increasingly important priorities for governments seeking to reinforce security partnerships.

By promoting a broader industrial alliance with NATO, South Korea aims to position its defence sector as a key contributor to multinational security efforts while expanding collaboration in emerging military technologies.
