South Korea and United States to hold spring joint military drill
South Korea and the United States are set to carry out their annual spring joint military exercise next month, reinforcing allied defense readiness and advancing preparations for the transfer of wartime operational control to Seoul.
The 11-day drill, known as Freedom Shield, is scheduled to take place from March 9 to 19. According to a joint statement from South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff and United States Forces Korea, the exercise will combine command post simulations with field training operations conducted under the “Warrior Shield” framework.
Military officials say the drills are designed to strengthen combined capabilities through multi-domain operations spanning land, sea, air, cyber and space. The exercise also forms part of broader efforts to ensure a conditions-based transition of wartime operational control (OPCON) from Washington to Seoul.
The OPCON transfer has long been a central issue in the bilateral alliance. While South Korea maintains peacetime control of its armed forces, wartime command remains under US leadership. Seoul aims to complete the necessary verification stages required to assume full operational authority within the current presidential term, which runs through 2030.
Officials indicated that certain field training components could be scaled back compared with previous editions. The potential adjustment comes amid diplomatic efforts by Seoul to stabilize inter-Korean relations. North Korea has consistently criticized the joint exercises, describing them as preparations for invasion, a claim both allies firmly reject, emphasizing the defensive nature of the drills.
Freedom Shield is one of the two principal annual combined exercises conducted by the allies, alongside the Ulchi Freedom Shield drills held later in the year. Together, they represent a cornerstone of deterrence strategy on the Korean Peninsula.
