South Africa repatriates over 900 Mozambicans amid rising Xenophobia concerns
South African border authorities have confirmed the successful repatriation of more than 900 Mozambican nationals in one of the largest coordinated return operations in recent months, amid growing concerns over xenophobic tensions in the country.
According to the Border Management Authority (BMA), a total of 933 Mozambican citizens left South Africa through the Lebombo border post. Of these, 926 were successfully repatriated, while seven individuals were denied departure due to documentation or nationality issues, including cases involving minors without proper papers.
Authorities stated that the operation included individuals processed through detention facilities as well as others who travelled under organized return arrangements coordinated with Mozambican diplomatic services. All passengers underwent identity verification, biometric screening, and immigration status checks before departure.
Officials also reported that a number of individuals had overstayed their visas, while special attention was given to minors to ensure compliance with child protection and cross-border movement regulations.
The repatriation comes amid a broader climate of tension in South Africa, where recent incidents of violence against foreign nationals have raised alarm across the region. Mozambican authorities previously confirmed the deaths of several citizens in attacks linked to xenophobic unrest in coastal areas.
South Africa hosts millions of foreign nationals, many from neighboring countries, and has experienced recurring waves of anti-immigrant sentiment, often linked to economic pressures and informal employment competition.
In response to rising insecurity, several African countries, including Malawi and Ghana, have also initiated voluntary repatriation programs for their citizens living in South Africa.
Regional partners have urged calm and stronger protection for migrants, while governments continue to coordinate responses to prevent further escalation of tensions.
