Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico Injured in Shooting Following Government Meeting
In an unexpected twist, Slovakia's Prime Minister Robert Fico found himself the victim of a shooting following a government meeting in Handlova, as per reports from the country's state news agency TASR. Ľuboš Blaha, the deputy speaker of the Slovak Parliament, was cited as the source of this alarming information.
According to TASR, multiple shots were fired, although Fico's condition remained undisclosed at the time of reporting. The Operational Headquarters of Slovakia's emergency medical services promptly responded to the incident, receiving notification of a 59-year-old man sustaining gunshot wounds in Handlova shortly after 2:30 p.m. local time. A helicopter ambulance was dispatched to the scene.
Handlova, the site of the shooting, is situated approximately two hours' drive from Slovakia's capital, Bratislava, where the government had convened for an off-site meeting.
Fico, known for his pro-Russian stance, clinched his third term as Slovakian prime minister in October of the preceding year. He has vocally criticized the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, attributing blame to "Ukrainian Nazis and fascists" for instigating President Vladimir Putin's invasion, a narrative echoing Putin's own misleading justifications for the war effort.
Before his current tenure, Fico fostered a strong alliance with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, particularly in their shared criticism of the European Union while in opposition.
As details surrounding the shooting unfold, the nation awaits updates on the Prime Minister's condition and the circumstances of this alarming event. The attack on a sitting head of government has reverberated across the political spectrum, sparking concerns about security ramifications and broader implications for Slovakia's stability.
Authorities are anticipated to release further information as the investigation progresses, shedding light on the motives behind this audacious act and the steps taken to safeguard the nation's leadership.
