Severe weather in Morocco leaves several roads closed this weekend
Heavy rainfall and rising river levels have forced the closure of several roads across Morocco this weekend, according to the latest report from the country’s road authorities. Flooding and landslides triggered by severe weather conditions have disrupted traffic in several northern regions.
Officials reported that at least eight road sections remained closed to traffic as of the latest update issued on Saturday night. Most of these disruptions were recorded in the province of Sidi Kacem Province, where swollen rivers overflowed and submerged several road crossings.
In some areas, the closures were caused by landslides and falling rocks. Two routes remained impassable due to such incidents, including a section of the regional road linking Derdara and Tanakoub in the province of Chefchaouen Province. Another affected route connects Aïn Dorij and Teroual in Ouazzane Province. Authorities said that traffic remains completely suspended on these roads with no local detours available.
Flooding also affected several routes near the Sebou River, one of the country’s largest waterways. Rising water levels submerged multiple regional and provincial roads, particularly in the Sidi Kacem area, leaving drivers without alternative routes in some locations.
In the region of Rabat, another major road was temporarily closed after water levels rose in the Korifla River. Authorities have recommended a detour using nearby provincial roads connecting Aïn Aouda and El Brachoua.
Officials are urging motorists to exercise caution and check road conditions before traveling, particularly in northern and mountainous areas where weather conditions remain unstable. Weather services have also warned of continued cold temperatures, snowfall in higher elevations, and possible thunderstorms through the weekend.
