Russian drone strike hits residential building in Romania border city

A suspected Russian drone struck a residential building in the Romanian border city of Galați during a night attack linked to ongoing strikes in nearby Ukraine. The impact caused an explosion and left at least two people injured. The incident occurred near the frontier with Ukraine’s Odesa region, where drone activity has intensified in recent months.

Romania authorities said the strike took place during a broader wave of drone attacks targeting southern Ukraine. The proximity between the two areas has turned border regions into spillover zones for aerial incidents. Emergency services were deployed immediately, while forensic and explosives units were sent to determine the origin and trajectory of the drone. Military aircraft were also scrambled as part of the response protocol.

The episode adds to a rising pattern of airspace violations involving suspected Russian drones entering Romanian territory. Data collected over the past year shows repeated incursions, debris recoveries, and air policing missions along the eastern flank of NATO. Officials have recorded multiple incidents since the start of the full-scale war in Ukraine, with a steady increase in aerial alerts and defensive deployments.

In earlier incidents, drone fragments have damaged infrastructure in border settlements, increasing pressure on NATO’s southeastern defenses. Romania has expanded its air policing measures and coordinated more closely with allied forces to intercept or monitor drones drifting across the frontier. The latest strike has renewed concerns among local residents in Galați, where repeated alerts have become part of daily life as the war in Ukraine continues to reshape regional security dynamics.
