Russian chief of staff visits troops in eastern Ukraine
Russia’s chief of the general staff, Valery Gerasimov, has visited Russian troops deployed in eastern Ukraine, according to a statement from the Russian Ministry of Defense. The visit comes at a sensitive moment, as new diplomatic talks involving Russia, Ukraine, and the United States are expected to begin soon in Abu Dhabi.
During the inspection, Gerasimov reportedly reviewed the progress of military operations carried out by units of the western military group. Russian authorities said the visit was intended to assess combat readiness and ongoing missions, though no precise details were given regarding the timing or exact location.
Russian military officials have claimed continued advances on several fronts since the beginning of the year, stating that their forces have taken control of multiple settlements and expanded their territorial presence. Moscow also indicated that operations are continuing in southern areas, including directions near the city of Zaporizhzhia.
The announcement coincides with renewed diplomatic efforts aimed at finding a political solution to the conflict that began with Russia’s large-scale offensive in February 2022. While military activity remains intense on the ground, upcoming talks are seen as a potential opportunity to explore paths toward de-escalation.
