Russia strikes Ukraine amid intensifying talks over peace plan and economic concessions

Russia carried out a large-scale overnight missile and drone assault on Ukraine just hours before high-level peace discussions, heightening tensions as negotiators attempt to finalize a long-awaited framework to end the war. Explosions were reported across Kyiv and several regions after waves of Kinzhal, Iskander, and Kalibr missiles were launched, injuring at least eight civilians. Air defense systems operated through the night, intercepting a number of the incoming projectiles. Neighboring Poland temporarily closed two southeastern airports as a precaution, though local airspace was not breached and operations have since resumed.

The timing of the assault underscores the fragile balance surrounding upcoming talks between President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and President Donald Trump in Florida, where negotiators are reportedly close to completing a 20-point peace plan. The proposal seeks to freeze hostilities along current front lines while exploring long-term security guarantees for Ukraine. Disputes persist over territorial control in Donetsk, where Moscow wants Ukraine to withdraw from certain contested areas still under Ukrainian defense. Zelenskiy insists any changes to the country's territorial boundaries must be approved by national referendum.

Energy and economic arrangements are also at stake. The future of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, Europe’s largest and under Russian occupation since 2022, remains unresolved. U.S. mediators have suggested a shared energy management model allowing both sides to benefit from the facility’s output. Additionally, an American-backed proposal envisions creating a free economic zone in parts of Donetsk to foster civilian recovery once fighting ceases. Ukrainian officials remain cautious, viewing such concessions as politically sensitive and dependent on public consent. Meanwhile, Russian strikes continue to target power infrastructure and civilian hubs, especially in Odesa, signaling Moscow’s intent to weaken Ukraine’s resilience through winter.

The renewed violence underscores the limits of diplomacy in a conflict now shaped by military pressure, economic exhaustion, and geopolitical calculation. As Ukraine braces for more attacks, the world watches closely to see whether peace efforts led by Washington can withstand Moscow’s escalation and Kyiv’s firm defense of territorial sovereignty.
