Russia blocks tons of Moroccan tomatoes over virus detection

Russian authorities have restricted the entry of several tons of tomatoes imported from Morocco and Türkiye after detecting plant viruses during routine phytosanitary inspections.

According to Russia’s Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance, inspections carried out in late December identified the presence of two harmful plant viruses: the tomato brown rugose fruit virus and the pepino mosaic virus. The checks concerned multiple shipments totaling several dozen tons.

As a precautionary measure aimed at preventing the spread of these viruses within Russian territory, part of the cargo deemed contaminated was placed under quarantine and denied entry. The remaining shipments, which met sanitary standards after testing, were cleared for import.

The decision highlights Russia’s strict phytosanitary controls on agricultural imports, particularly fresh produce. Such measures are designed to protect domestic agriculture from potential biological threats that could impact crop yields and food security.

Morocco is one of the key exporters of fresh tomatoes to international markets, including Europe and Russia. Incidents of this nature may prompt closer cooperation between exporting countries and importing authorities to strengthen quality control and certification processes.
