Romania scrambles fighter jets after new drone incursion near Ukrainian border
Romania, a NATO member bordering Ukraine, deployed fighter jets early Wednesday after detecting a new drone incursion close to its territory. According to the Romanian Ministry of Defense, the alert was triggered shortly after midnight following Russian airstrikes on targets near the Ukrainian border.
The ministry reported that the drone appeared “intermittently on radar for about 12 minutes,” prompting an immediate response. Two German fighter jets currently operating from Romanian territory were sent to monitor the airspace and assess the situation.
Authorities indicated that no impact on Romanian soil was recorded and that the air defense systems continued surveillance throughout the night. The incident adds to a series of drone incursions observed in recent months, increasing pressure on Romania and other NATO states situated along the conflict’s frontier.
The Ministry of Defense reaffirmed that Romania remains vigilant and fully committed to protecting its airspace amid ongoing instability linked to the war in Ukraine.
