Rising from the Rubble: AMEAL Project Spearheads Earthquake Recovery in Morocco

In the mountainous regions of Morocco, where a devastating 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck in September 2023, a glimmer of hope has emerged. The newly announced AMEAL project stands as a catalyst for reconstruction and economic revival for the affected communities. This ambitious program, a collaboration between IECD Morocco and its strategic partner CARE Morocco, aims to bolster income-generating activities while restoring preschool education, two pillars essential for sustainable recovery.

The Al Haouz earthquake left deep scars across the regions of Al Haouz, Marrakech, Ouarzazate, and Azilal. With a tragic death toll exceeding 2,900 and more than 5,500 injured, the material damage is estimated at over 9 billion euros, underscoring the vulnerability of infrastructure to natural disasters. This crisis has highlighted major socio-economic challenges, including the need to stimulate local entrepreneurship and create jobs without marginalizing vulnerable groups, particularly women.

The AMEAL project positions itself as an innovative and comprehensive response to these challenges. Its holistic approach seeks to address the immediate needs of the affected communities while laying the groundwork for long-term sustainable development. By supporting the economic recovery of affected women and men while also restoring preschool education, the AMEAL project fosters women's empowerment and their engagement in the reconstruction process.

The opening ceremony, scheduled for May 2, 2024, in Marrakech, holds particular significance. This event marks the beginning of a new era of reconstruction and renewal for the earthquake-stricken communities. Bringing together key stakeholders such as His Excellency the French Ambassador to Morocco, donors, local and regional authorities, as well as members of the affected communities, this ceremony aims to be a space for exchange and mobilization around a shared vision: to rebuild better.

With an inclusive and participatory approach, the AMEAL project emphasizes the importance of women's empowerment and the promotion of gender equality. By encouraging female entrepreneurship and restoring preschool education, this ambitious program lays the foundation for a more resilient and equitable future for the regions affected by the earthquake.

In the aftermath of a disaster, the AMEAL project symbolizes hope for sustainable socio-economic renewal. By tackling challenges related to employment, education, and gender equality, this initiative aligns with a long-term vision of reconstruction, reflecting the resilience and dynamism of the Moroccan people.

As the world watches, the AMEAL project stands as a beacon of hope, demonstrating the power of collaboration and unwavering determination to rise from the rubble, stronger and more resilient than ever before.
