Rabat named Arab capital of information for 2026
The League of Arab States has officially declared Rabat, Morocco’s capital, as the Arab Capital of Information for 2026. The announcement was made during the 55th session of the Council of Arab Ministers of Information, held in Cairo on Wednesday.
The council also selected Doha as the Arab Capital of Information for 2027 and Damascus for 2028. It called on Morocco to develop a comprehensive program of cultural and media activities to mark Rabat’s selection, with a particular focus on celebrating Al Quds Acharif (Jerusalem) and its symbolic significance in the Arab and Islamic worlds.
Arab media outlets were urged to highlight the issue of occupied Al Quds and amplify the council's decision to recognize it as the eternal Arab Capital of Information.
Rabat, known as the City of Lights, is a prominent political and cultural hub in Morocco. Situated along the Atlantic Ocean and the Bouregreg River, it is celebrated for its serene ambiance, rich history, and remarkable heritage. The city houses key national institutions like the Royal Palace, the Moroccan Parliament, and several government ministries.
The city’s historical landmarks, including the Hassan Tower, the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, the Kasbah of the Udayas, and the Chellah, are among its major attractions, drawing visitors from across the globe. In 2012, Rabat earned UNESCO World Heritage recognition for its unique blend of modern urban planning and historical architecture.
Besides its historical significance, Rabat is known for its thriving cultural scene, modern infrastructure, and creative industries. Universities, cultural festivals, and artistic initiatives contribute to its reputation as a forward-looking city with a strong connection to its heritage.
