Princess Lalla Meryem of Morocco: A Royal Champion for Social Causes Marks 62nd Birthday

Morocco's Princess Lalla Meryem celebrated her 62nd birthday today, marking a life dedicated to advancing social causes and advocating for women's and children's rights. As a prominent member of the Moroccan royal family, Princess Lalla Meryem has consistently demonstrated her commitment to improving social welfare and championing humanitarian efforts.

From an early age, the princess has held significant roles in Moroccan society. In 1981, she was appointed President of the Social Works of the Royal Armed Forces by her father, the late King Hassan II. Her tireless work in this domain, coupled with her advocacy for women's and children's rights, earned her further recognition from her brother, King Mohammed VI. In a gesture of appreciation, the King named the officer graduating classes of 2020 through 2023 after Princess Lalla Meryem during their oath-taking ceremony.

The princess's influence extends beyond military affairs. She chairs several important organizations, including the Hassan II Foundation for Moroccans Living Abroad, the National Union of Moroccan Women, and the National Observatory for Children's Rights. Additionally, she serves as the honorary president of various associations dedicated to children's welfare.

Princess Lalla Meryem's efforts have garnered international acclaim. In 2001, UNESCO recognized her contributions by naming her a Goodwill Ambassador, acknowledging her global impact on children's causes and rights. That same year, during an official visit to Lebanon, she received the Ouissam of the Grand Cordon of National Merit from President Emile Lahoud and the Hariri Foundation's gold medal.

Her dedication to empowering women was further acknowledged in 2010 when she received the "World Women Leaders" Award. This honor recognized her remarkable actions, sense of solidarity, and ongoing efforts to strengthen women's status in Morocco, the Arab world, and Africa.

Throughout the years, Princess Lalla Meryem has maintained an active role in official activities, often representing the King at major national and international events. In 2023 alone, she participated in several high-profile engagements, including a luncheon at the Elysée Palace in Paris, presiding over prestigious golf tournaments, and chairing the Board of Directors of the Royal Armed Forces Social Works.

As Morocco celebrates Princess Lalla Meryem's birthday, her diverse actions and deep commitment continue to inspire the Moroccan people. Her royal status, combined with her hands-on approach to social issues, has made her a unique figure in the country's public life – a princess who uses her position to effect real change and bring attention to critical social causes.
