Prince William Reflects on Challenging Year Amid Family Health Struggles
Prince William has shared that the past year has been “brutal” and “probably the hardest year of my life” as he faced the dual challenges of his wife and father battling cancer.
During a video interview marking the end of his week-long visit to Cape Town for the Earthshot Prize awards, the Prince opened up about his emotional struggles. “Honestly, it’s been dreadful,” he said. “Trying to manage everything else while keeping everything on track has been incredibly difficult. But I’m incredibly proud of my wife and my father for handling everything with such strength. From a personal family perspective, it’s been, yes, brutal.”
In February, Buckingham Palace revealed that Prince William’s father, King Charles, had been diagnosed with cancer. Then, in March, William’s wife, the Princess of Wales, publicly disclosed her own cancer diagnosis.
Catherine, who completed a course of chemotherapy, returned to her public duties in September. In a heartfelt message shared with her family, she spoke about her cancer journey, expressing her focus on staying cancer-free and enjoying time outdoors with her family.
King Charles, who has been receiving treatment as an outpatient, is expected to return to full duties next year, including more overseas engagements.
In his conversation with the British media, Prince William also reflected on the responsibilities that come with being the heir to the throne. When asked about the additional duties, he admitted, “Do I like more responsibility? No.” However, he emphasized that his role with initiatives like the Earthshot Prize gives him a meaningful way to make a positive impact. “The future for me is about doing something good, helping people, and making a real difference,” he said. “Earthshot is a culmination of all that.”
The Prince held his Earthshot Prize ceremony in an eco-dome on Wednesday, describing the initiative as a “movement for change” and urging global participation. He acknowledged that while Earthshot carefully vets its finalists, some companies hesitate to engage, waiting for “something better down the line.”
As Earthshot continues to grow, it reflects William’s commitment to environmental sustainability and social responsibility, leveraging his platform for positive change.
