Orcas Implicated in Sinking of 15-Meter Yacht Off Moroccan Coast

In a dramatic incident reported by various media outlets, orcas have once again been linked to the sinking of a sailing yacht near the Strait of Gibraltar. The incident has raised questions about the enigmatic behavior of these highly intelligent marine mammals.

According to reports from Spanish newspapers and other media sources, the two-member crew of the 15-meter yacht "Alborán Cognac" encountered a harrowing situation on Sunday morning. Approximately 26 kilometers off Cape Spartel in Morocco, at the southern entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar, they heard muffled thumps against the hull.

Distress Call and Rescue

As the situation escalated, with water breaching the vessel and the rudder sustaining damage, the sailors issued a distress call. The Spanish Maritime Rescue Service swiftly mobilized a helicopter from Spain, while requesting assistance from the nearby tanker "MT Lascaux."

Approximately an hour after the distress call, the tanker successfully rescued the shipwrecked crew members. However, efforts to salvage the yacht proved futile, and it ultimately sank, marking the seventh such incident since 2020 in the region.

Enigmatic Orca Behavior

Experts studying the behavior of these intelligent marine mammals suggest that the incident was likely caused by a group of 37 orcas known to inhabit the waters between northern Spain and the Strait of Gibraltar. While the term "attacks" is commonly used, researchers prefer the term "interactions," as the underlying reasons for this behavior, observed exclusively in this maritime area, remain unclear.

Potential Explanations

Theories range from the orcas engaging in playful behavior to a potential reaction to a negative experience with a vessel. Despite the speculations, the exact motivations behind these recurring incidents continue to puzzle scientists and maritime authorities alike.

As investigations into this intriguing phenomenon continue, the incident serves as a reminder of the complex relationship between humans and the inhabitants of the vast ocean depths, urging caution and respect for the marine environment.
