Ceuta: Seven Moroccan migrants intercepted while attempting sea crossing by kayak

Spanish authorities have intercepted seven Moroccan migrants who were attempting to leave Ceuta by kayak and reach mainland Spain, highlighting continued maritime movement from the North African enclave following the large migration influx recorded in late July.

The Spanish Civil Guard stopped three kayaks on Tuesday after they departed from the Calamocarro area of Ceuta. Seven Moroccan nationals were found aboard the small vessels, according to local reports.

Maritime surveillance intensified

The latest interception came one day after another operation near Ceuta. Authorities had stopped a recreational boat approximately five nautical miles from Punta Almina carrying 15 migrants. The vessel's skipper was among those on board.

Spanish security services have increased maritime monitoring around Ceuta since the major influx of migrants at the end of July. The heightened patrols have focused on identifying small boats and other vessels being used to transport people toward mainland Spain.

Small boats used for crossings

Local sources cited in reports on the interceptions indicate that some departures are organized from gathering points around the Trampolín area. Migrants are reportedly taken to the coast before boarding small craft or recreational boats used for the attempted journeys.

The movement has placed additional attention on maritime routes connecting Ceuta with southern Spain, particularly as authorities continue to monitor departures following the summer migration surge.

Police figures show dozens of crossings

Data from Spain’s National Police, submitted to the court, indicate that 148 migrants travelled from Ceuta toward Cadiz and Malaga aboard 29 boats between July 30 and August 19.

The figures provide an indication of the scale of maritime movements during the weeks following the late-July influx. They also form part of information being examined by Spanish authorities and judicial bodies as investigations into the crossings continue.

The latest interceptions underline the continuing role of maritime routes in attempts to reach mainland Spain from Ceuta, while security forces maintain increased surveillance along the surrounding waters.
