Nigerian court orders TikTokers to marry after ‘indecent’ video
A court in Kano, northern Nigeria’s largest city, has ordered the Islamic morality police to arrange the marriage of two TikTok celebrities after a video of them kissing was deemed inappropriate in the conservative Muslim community. The ruling reflects the region’s strict adherence to Sharia law, which operates alongside the country’s secular legal system.
The judge instructed Kano’s Hisbah, the Islamic morality police, to ensure the couple’s marriage takes place within 60 days. According to judicial spokesperson Baba-Jibo Ibrahim, the court justified the decision by citing the pair's open display of affection on TikTok, describing it as a sign of their love.
The two individuals involved, Idris Mai Wushirya and Basira Yar Guda, gained attention after sharing videos of themselves hugging and kissing. Wushirya, who has previously faced scrutiny from authorities for similar actions, was arrested and detained. Hisbah Director General Abba Sufi confirmed receipt of the court order and stated that preparations for the marriage were already underway.
Sufi also mentioned that both individuals had consented to the union. While the parents of Wushirya have already given their explicit approval, Hisbah is working to secure consent from Yar Guda’s family, who reside in Zamfara State, over 300 kilometers away.
Kano is home to Kannywood, the Hausa-language film industry, which produces more than 200 films monthly and reaches audiences across West Africa. Religious authorities in Kano have extended their influence to monitor social media content, further exemplifying the region’s strict moral guidelines.
