Musk's Doge Team Uses AI for Surveillance on Federal Employees
Elon Musk's DOGE team is reportedly utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) to monitor communications within U.S. federal agencies, focusing on identifying hostility towards President Donald Trump and his policies, according to insiders. This surveillance, part of Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), aims to target perceived disloyalty among federal workers, following widespread government staff reductions and cost-cutting measures.
The team is reportedly using the Signal app for communications, a tool that raises concerns about potential violations of federal record-keeping regulations due to its disappearing message feature. Additionally, Musk’s Grok AI chatbot, designed to rival ChatGPT, has been heavily employed in the monitoring process, though the specific ways it’s being used remain unclear.
Ethics experts are raising alarms about the lack of transparency in DOGE’s operations, with fears that the information gathered could be used to target political opponents or further the interests of Musk and the Trump administration. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has also been a focal point, with sources claiming that EPA staff were informed that AI would be used to monitor for anti-Trump or anti-Musk sentiments. This surveillance allegedly includes monitoring platforms like Microsoft Teams and other communication apps.
Musk’s goal for DOGE has been to streamline government operations and cut waste, fraud, and abuse, with a target to reduce U.S. spending by $1 trillion. However, critics argue that DOGE’s approach could lead to the purging of non-partisan employees, replacing them with loyalists who might overlook corruption. The use of AI for surveillance further fuels concerns about government overreach and the suppression of dissenting opinions.
Despite its controversial nature, DOGE continues to operate with limited oversight, bypassing traditional document tracking methods and using platforms like Google Docs for quick collaboration. Legal battles are ongoing to force DOGE to comply with transparency laws, but as of now, little information has been released to the public.
