Municipal police strike in La Baule: understanding the causes of their discontent

Tensions are rising within the municipal police force in La Baule, a seaside town in western France, as officers express growing dissatisfaction over working conditions and pay.

On Thursday, around a dozen officers gathered in front of the town hall, supported by trade unions, after filing a formal strike notice. The protest was backed by the CFTC-FPT union and the Syndicate for the Defense of Municipal Police Officers (SDPM).

Two main issues lie at the heart of the dispute. First, officers are demanding a clearer annual work schedule, arguing that current planning only provides visibility for a few months instead of a full year. Second, they are contesting recent changes to their compensation system, which they say has led to a reduction in income, particularly regarding pay for weekends, holidays, and special duty days.

Union representatives claim that the removal of certain allowances has resulted in significant financial losses for officers. They also criticize what they describe as a difficult working environment and increased pressure on staff.

The city administration, however, defends the reforms, explaining that changes were required to comply with national regulations introduced in 2024. Officials argue that the municipality already offers competitive pay conditions and applies the maximum legal compensation rates. They also say efforts are underway to improve advance scheduling for staff.

Despite a meeting between union representatives and senior city officials described as constructive, the SDPM maintains that dissatisfaction remains high and does not rule out further strike action.

A broader municipal plan is also underway, including an increase in staffing, modernization of equipment, and the construction of a new police headquarters. However, unions argue that these measures do not offset the current concerns regarding pay and workload.

The conflict highlights ongoing tensions in local public services across France, where reforms to compensation systems continue to generate debate between authorities and workers.
