Morocco unveils digital strategy ahead of Gitex Africa 2026 summit

Morocco’s minister for digital transition, Amal Fellah Seghrouchni, outlined a national strategy to accelerate the country’s digital transformation ahead of GITEX Africa 2026 in Marrakech. The plan aims to strengthen Morocco’s role as a leading technology hub in Africa and expand its global reach.

The event, held under the patronage of King Mohammed VI, reflects the growing importance of digital policy in national development. The minister referenced a 2018 royal speech at the African Union summit on the continental free trade area, which emphasized the role of digital tools and youth in driving economic change across Africa.

Morocco’s New Development Model places innovation and entrepreneurship at the center of economic reform. The Maroc Digital 2030 strategy sets clear targets, including the creation of 3,000 startups, the emergence of Moroccan unicorns, and the annual training of 100,000 digital professionals.

To support these goals, the government launched a venture-building program backed by more than 700 million dirhams to assist over 800 startups in early growth stages. In parallel, more than 2 billion dirhams has been allocated to venture capital funding to help scale innovative companies.

The strategy also prioritizes advanced technologies, especially artificial intelligence. Initiatives such as the Jazari Institute and Jazari Root aim to boost applied research and develop high-level digital skills. Morocco is also working with the United Nations Development Programme through the Digital for Sustainable Development Hub to promote digital solutions linked to sustainability.

The Morocco 300 initiative builds on earlier programs by enabling 300 startups to participate in Gitex Africa 2026. More than 930 applications were submitted, reflecting strong momentum in the national tech ecosystem. Selected startups receive training, mentorship, networking opportunities, and access to international investors.

A new partnership with Keiretsu Forum will further expand funding opportunities. Through the Keiretsu Startup Connect program, around 100 Moroccan startups will gain direct exposure to global investors. A smaller group will also take part in an immersion program in Silicon Valley.

The government aims to deepen links between Morocco and major global technology hubs. Officials expect this approach to help local startups scale internationally while maintaining a strong domestic base.

Through Gitex Africa 2026 and the Morocco 300 initiative, Morocco seeks to build a structured digital ecosystem that drives innovation, attracts investment, and strengthens competitiveness over the long term.
