Morocco’s seawater desalination strategy gains international recognition
Morocco’s ambitious approach to seawater desalination is attracting international attention as countries around the world search for solutions to growing water shortages caused by climate change and prolonged droughts.
Faced with increasing pressure on its water resources, Morocco has adopted a comprehensive strategy aimed at strengthening water security while supporting economic development and agricultural sustainability. The country has set an objective of significantly expanding the role of desalinated seawater in meeting domestic water demand over the coming years.

One of the most significant projects currently under development is a major desalination facility in the Casablanca-Settat region. Once completed, the plant is expected to become one of the largest desalination facilities in Africa and among the largest worldwide to operate primarily using renewable energy sources. The project is intended to provide drinking water to millions of residents while also supporting agricultural irrigation.
Moroccan authorities have emphasized that desalination is no longer viewed as an alternative solution but rather as a key component of the country's long-term response to changing climate conditions. Officials argue that traditional dependence on rainfall and reservoir storage alone is no longer sufficient in an era of increasing drought frequency and water stress.
A central feature of Morocco’s strategy is the integration of renewable energy into water production. New desalination plants are being linked to solar and wind energy projects, helping reduce operational costs and lower carbon emissions associated with water treatment processes.
