Morocco opens new consulate in Essen to serve its growing diaspora
The Moroccan government has officially approved the establishment of a new Consulate General in Essen, Germany, through Decree No. 2.24.235 published in Official Bulletin No. 7404 dated May 15. This move was initiated by the Head of Government following a favorable opinion from the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates.
The decision aligns with Morocco's broader consular strategy aimed at enhancing services for Moroccan nationals residing in western Germany. This region, particularly the state of North Rhine–Westphalia, is home to a dense Moroccan community.
Essen, known for its cultural and industrial significance, hosts several thousand Moroccan citizens, most of whom hail from northern Morocco. The new consular office is expected to streamline administrative processes, improve service quality, and bring consular assistance closer to the community.
According to the decree, the new consulate’s jurisdiction will primarily cover North Rhine–Westphalia and may extend to the state of Hesse, depending on the Ministry's allocation of responsibilities.
This latest addition complements existing Moroccan consulates in Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, and Bonn, reflecting Rabat’s commitment to maintaining close and responsive ties with its diaspora through an expanding consular network.
