Morocco elected to chair 32nd UN commission on crime prevention, criminal justice
Morocco has been elected to chair the United Nations' highest commission on crime prevention and criminal justice for the upcoming year. The Kingdom will preside over the 32nd session of the UN Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ) following unanimous support from the African Group of UN member states.
Azzeddine Farhane, Morocco's Ambassador to Austria, will assume the presidency, indicating global confidence in Morocco's capabilities to combat terrorism, organized crime networks, and other security threats.
Ambassador Farhane emphasized that his appointment recognizes Morocco's "significant contribution" to shaping international crime reduction policies, showcasing the Kingdom's credibility in addressing emerging criminal threats in the 21st century.
Recently, Ambassador Farhane and the President of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs jointly led meetings to discuss enhancing the operations and strategic direction of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime.
In his new role as CCPCJ President, Ambassador Farhane will chair crucial discussions on budgetary matters, preparations for the 15th UN Crime Congress in 2025, and the review of progress on the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals during Friday's meetings.
As CCPCJ President, Morocco will lead the UN's central forum where member states align strategies and establish priorities in the fight against transnational organized crime over the next year.
The Commission serves as a platform for nations to exchange expertise on strengthening domestic criminal justice systems and promoting international cooperation. Its mandate focuses on advancing global efforts to detect, deter, and disrupt increasingly complex and technologically sophisticated criminal networks.
