Morocco becomes the first African country to join TV5MONDE governance

Morocco is set to become the first African country to join the governance structure of TV5MONDE, marking an important step in the Kingdom’s growing presence within international francophone media institutions.

The global French-language television network announced that Morocco had officially expressed its intention to participate in the governance of TV5MONDE alongside the six current funding governments that support the broadcaster. This initiative reflects the network’s broader strategy to open its governance to additional members of the international Francophonie community.

In an official letter addressed to the Swiss presidency representing TV5MONDE’s funding governments, Moroccan Minister of Youth, Culture and Communication Mohammed Mehdi Bensaid confirmed the country’s commitment to the integration process.

According to the statement released by TV5MONDE, Morocco emphasized its support for transparency, cooperation and good governance principles, which are considered essential values within the international media partnership.

The six governments currently involved in financing and governing TV5MONDE are Canada, France, Switzerland, Quebec, the Wallonia-Brussels Federation and Monaco. Morocco’s future participation would represent a historic expansion of African representation within the organization’s leadership structure.

As part of the cooperation process, TV5MONDE also announced plans to strengthen collaboration with SNRT, Morocco’s national public broadcasting group. The partnership is expected to include co-productions, cultural exchanges and the distribution of Moroccan audiovisual content across TV5MONDE’s international channels and streaming platform.

Founded in 1984, TV5MONDE broadcasts in nearly 200 countries and territories and reaches more than 400 million households worldwide. The network plays a major role in promoting the French language, cultural diversity and international media cooperation.

Observers believe Morocco’s integration into the governance of TV5MONDE could further reinforce the country’s cultural diplomacy and strengthen the visibility of African and Moroccan productions within global francophone media.
