Morocco backs UN resolution on two-state solution for Palestine

The United Nations General Assembly has approved a resolution supporting the two-state solution, with Morocco among 142 countries voting in favor of the New York Declaration. The resolution calls for the establishment of an independent State of Palestine, reaffirming global backing for a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Morocco reaffirms commitment to peace

Morocco, a long-standing advocate for peace and dialogue in the region, emphasized its support for the two-state solution as the most viable path to resolving the decades-long conflict. At today’s session, Rabat reiterated its rejection of Israel’s “unacceptable measures” and renewed its call for an immediate ceasefire.

This reaffirmation follows Morocco's September 4 statement during the Arab League Council, where it underscored the importance of establishing a Palestinian state to ensure regional stability and balance.

International support grows

The resolution, which also condemns the humanitarian crisis caused by the Israeli blockade in Gaza, reflects increasing international momentum for recognizing a Palestinian state. Palestine expressed gratitude to the countries that supported the resolution while denouncing the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza.

The declaration also condemned Hamas’ attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023, while calling for immediate steps to address the humanitarian crisis and ensure protections for civilians.

Divided international response

Ten countries, including Israel, the United States, Argentina, and Hungary, voted against the resolution. Meanwhile, 12 nations, such as Czechia, Ethiopia, and Albania, abstained.

The resolution follows a July international conference hosted by Saudi Arabia and France at the UN headquarters, which focused on strategies to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Palestinian leadership welcomes vote

Hussein Al-Sheikh, Vice President of Palestine, praised the resolution as a critical step toward ending Israeli occupation. “The growing international recognition of the State of Palestine provides a key foundation for safeguarding the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination,” he said. He added that the resolution bolsters regional and international security by advancing the two-state solution.
