Morocco announces bid for a non-permanent UN Security Council seat

Morocco has officially announced its candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2028–2029 term, placing its diplomatic experience and commitment to multilateral cooperation at the center of its campaign.

Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita made the announcement in New York while delivering Morocco’s statement during the general debate of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly. He said the candidacy reflects Rabat’s intention to contribute to international efforts aimed at maintaining peace and security.

Bourita presented Morocco’s bid as part of a broader approach to international cooperation based on solidarity, respect for international law and the principles of national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

According to the Moroccan Foreign Ministry, the candidacy is also intended to build on the country’s longstanding diplomatic engagement and its role in promoting stability and sustainable development. Morocco has previously served on the Security Council three times, in 1963–1964, 1992–1993 and 2012–2013, according to UN records.

If elected, Morocco would seek to use its position to support international peace, collective security and multilateral diplomacy while contributing to discussions on major global challenges.

The Security Council is composed of 15 members, including five permanent members and 10 members elected by the General Assembly for two-year terms. The elected members participate in Council decisions alongside the permanent members, including on issues involving international peace and security.

Morocco’s latest candidacy comes as the international community faces a complex diplomatic environment marked by conflicts, regional instability, humanitarian crises and growing pressure on multilateral institutions.

Bourita said Morocco’s approach would remain anchored in the purposes and principles of the UN Charter. He also linked the candidacy to Morocco’s continued contribution to what he described as three central areas of UN action: peace, development and the rule of law.

The announcement marks the beginning of Morocco’s campaign for the 2028–2029 mandate, with the country seeking to secure the support required for election by the UN General Assembly.
