Morocco and Turkey Forge Strategic Energy and Mining Partnerships

In a significant move aimed at bolstering their economic and strategic ties, Morocco and Turkey have signed two pivotal agreements focusing on energy, earth sciences, and mining. The signing ceremony took place on Thursday in Rabat and featured Morocco’s Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Leila Benali, and Turkey’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Alparslan Bayraktar.

Expanding Horizons in Energy and Mining

These landmark agreements are set to deepen cooperation in a wide array of sectors, including renewable energy, green hydrogen, energy efficiency, and electricity generation and distribution. The collaboration extends to the integration of energy markets, deployment of clean technologies, decarbonization initiatives, and the exploration of hydrocarbons.

In the realm of mining and earth sciences, the partnership will encompass geological mapping, remote sensing, geographic information systems (GIS), and the use of artificial intelligence for mineral assessment. Additionally, it will focus on geological research, post-mining management, seismic monitoring, strategic and critical mineral management, and joint energy and mining exploration projects.

A Framework for Enhanced Collaboration

The agreements establish a robust framework for public-private partnerships, research and development, and technical assistance. They also emphasize capacity building, the exchange of expertise and technologies, joint project development, and cooperation between innovation agencies and research organizations. To facilitate these efforts, both nations will engage in technical visits, workshops, and seminars.

Strengthening Historical Ties

During the ceremony, both ministers celebrated the enduring bilateral relations nurtured over the past two decades under the leadership of King Mohammed VI and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Diplomatic ties between Morocco and Turkey were formalized in 1956, shortly after Morocco gained independence.

Economic Synergy

Since the implementation of a free trade agreement in 2006, economic relations between the two countries have flourished, with trade volumes surpassing $2.7 billion in 2018. This longstanding partnership has been marked by numerous diplomatic and commercial agreements and the sharing of expertise across vital and complementary sectors.

Shared Challenges and Opportunities

Minister Bayraktar highlighted the shared challenges faced by both nations, such as rising energy demand and ambitious climate goals. "Our countries share common challenges such as rising energy demand and ambitious climate goals," he noted.

Minister Benali echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that the agreements present an opportunity to address mutual challenges and explore growth prospects in renewable energy, minerals, and natural gas. "We have also established a working team that will develop concrete projects in the coming months, including energy investments and purchases to reduce the energy bills of both our nations," Benali added.

Looking Ahead

Minister Bayraktar's visit to Morocco underscores the ongoing consultations and coordination between the two countries. These efforts aim to enhance bilateral relations across multiple sectors, explore new avenues for cooperation, and foster mutual investments.

The ceremony was attended by the Turkish Ambassador to Morocco and senior officials from Morocco’s Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development and its affiliated agencies, including ONHYM, ONEE, MASEN, AMEE, and IRESEN.

As Morocco and Turkey deepen their cooperation in the energy and mining sectors, both nations look forward to leveraging their collective strengths for sustainable growth and mutual prosperity.
