Morocco and Spain deepen security cooperation during high-level Rabat meeting

Morocco and Spain have reaffirmed their close security partnership following a high-level meeting in Rabat between senior officials from the two countries, highlighting continued cooperation in counterterrorism, intelligence sharing and the fight against transnational crime.

The meeting brought together Abdellatif Hammouchi, Director General of Morocco's General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) and General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance (DGST), and General Luis Peláez Piñeiro, head of the Intelligence Command of Spain's Guardia Civil, who is leading a senior security delegation on an official working visit to Morocco.

Strategic partnership highlighted

According to a statement issued by the DGSN-DGST, the visit reflects the advanced level of cooperation that has developed between Moroccan and Spanish security and intelligence services.

The partnership has become a key framework for operational coordination against terrorism, organized crime and other forms of cross-border criminal activity, with both countries maintaining close collaboration on intelligence exchange and joint security operations.

Spanish honors presented to Moroccan security officials

The meeting also featured a ceremony during which several senior officials from Morocco's DGST and DGSN received prestigious Spanish decorations.

The honors were awarded following a decree issued by Spain's Minister of the Interior in recognition of the recipients' contribution to strengthening operational cooperation and technical assistance between the security services of both countries.

According to Moroccan authorities, the distinctions symbolize the strength of bilateral relations and Spain's recognition of the professionalism demonstrated by Moroccan security institutions in addressing shared regional security challenges.

Cooperation extends beyond bilateral interests

Officials described the Morocco–Spain security partnership as being founded on mutual trust, continuous coordination and shared strategic interests.

The cooperation is regarded as an important pillar in maintaining security across the western Mediterranean, where both countries work together to counter terrorism, dismantle organized crime networks and address transnational security threats.

During the meeting, General Luis Peláez Piñeiro praised the depth of bilateral cooperation, describing Morocco as an indispensable strategic partner in combating terrorism and organized crime amid increasingly complex regional security challenges.

The discussions further reinforced the long-standing collaboration between Rabat and Madrid, which continues to play a significant role in promoting regional stability and enhancing cross-border security cooperation.
