Morocco Advances Its Green Transition Plan with Ambitious Project

Morocco is taking significant steps towards a sustainable future with the launch of a groundbreaking project supported by €10 million from key development partners. This initiative, known as the "Just Transition" project, marks a pivotal moment in the country's journey towards a low-carbon economy, aligning with its commitments under the Paris Agreement.

Led by Morocco's Ministry of Economy and Finance and Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, the "Just Transition" project aims to equip the nation with the necessary tools and strategies to effectively implement its climate goals. This €10 million funding, provided jointly by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and the European Union, will play a crucial role in supporting Morocco's transition to greener industries and creating new job opportunities.

EU Ambassador Patricia Llombart Cussac commended Morocco's proactive stance on climate action and its dedication to integrating sustainability into its economic framework. She emphasized the enduring partnership between Morocco and the EU in addressing climate challenges and highlighted the €50 million EU "Green Energy" program, which aims to bolster Morocco's renewable energy transition through regulatory cooperation.

German Ambassador Robert Dölger reiterated the importance of a "just transition" that prioritizes social equity while driving climate progress. The project will assist Morocco in updating its climate commitments in line with the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and preparing businesses for upcoming carbon pricing schemes, such as the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism.

During the project launch event, experts discussed the core principles of a "just transition" and explored decarbonization opportunities amidst global crises. There was consensus on the urgent need to accelerate sustainability solutions as climate threats escalate, underscoring the importance of collaborative efforts between Morocco and the EU.

With ambitious plans and support from key allies, Morocco is emerging as a frontrunner in sustainable development, paving the way for a greener and more resilient future.
