Morocco-Nigeria gas pipeline progresses toward key milestones

Amina Benkhadra, the Director General of Morocco’s National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines (ONHYM), announced that the Morocco-Nigeria gas pipeline project has reached significant milestones in its development. Her remarks came during the 10th Geopolitical Meetings of Trouville, held in northern France, where Morocco was honored as a guest of honor.

Benkhadra emphasized the progress made in engineering and environmental studies related to the pipeline. She expressed optimism about the project's future, stating that all necessary conditions for success are in place. The focus now shifts towards accelerating the next phases following the signing of the relevant treaty and the establishment of a company to oversee further developments.

The pipeline is envisioned as a vital energy corridor, linking Africa to Europe and benefitting 13 countries. It aims to supply energy to approximately 400 million people and stimulate growth in critical industrial sectors, such as mining. Benkhadra highlighted that the socio-economic advantages of this large-scale initiative will position Africa as a significant contributor to Europe’s energy security and resource diversification.

In May, Energy Transition Minister Leila Benali confirmed the completion of the engineering studies, which included the optimal routing of the pipeline. The total estimated budget for the project is around $25 billion, underscoring its potential as a catalyst for economic and industrial development.

The infrastructure is designed to span over 6,000 kilometers, with a projected capacity of 15 to 30 billion cubic meters of gas annually.
