Mitch McConnell falls during confrontation with activist but resumes Senate duties
Senator Mitch McConnell, Republican of Kentucky, tripped and fell on October 16 while being confronted by an activist in the basement of a Senate office building. The 83-year-old lawmaker was approached by a protester, identified as Stella, who questioned him about immigration policies associated with former President Donald Trump.
The activist asked McConnell, “Do you support ICE taking working people off the street and kidnapping them?” as she moved close to him. McConnell, rounding the corner of a desk, stumbled and fell on his side, bracing himself with one arm. A bystander and a Capitol Police officer assisted him back to his feet. The senator then waved and smiled at those nearby.
Stephanie Penn, McConnell’s press secretary, assured that the senator was fine and continued with his schedule. “He’s all good,” she stated, adding that McConnell proceeded to vote as planned later that afternoon on a defense appropriations bill amid an ongoing government shutdown.
The protester was part of the Sunrise Movement, a progressive group advocating for climate action. In a statement, the group criticized McConnell, pointing to his age and political record. “Mitch McConnell couldn’t even answer a simple question without falling down,” said Aru Shiney-Ajay, the organization’s executive director. “Both parties are run by out-of-touch octogenarians whose incompetence is costly to the American people.”
McConnell’s recent health incidents have raised concerns. Earlier this year, he fell twice in February, once requiring a wheelchair. He has also experienced moments of freezing during press briefings, prompting scrutiny of his fitness for office.
The U.S. Capitol Police did not comment on the incident, citing limited operations due to the federal shutdown.
