Mexico: 28 rescued at Sea, Including 27 teenagers aged 14 to 17
The Mexican Navy has rescued 28 people, nearly all of them minors, from a drifting boat in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Sinaloa state in northwestern Mexico.
According to the Sinaloa prosecutor’s office, 27 of those rescued were between 14 and 17 years old, while the 28th was just over 18. All were reportedly from the southern border region near Chiapas state.
The teenagers have been placed under the care of Mexico’s child welfare system, which said they would receive “comprehensive attention and protection” while authorities determine their legal status.
No arrests have been made so far, and officials have not provided details about the group’s nationality or the circumstances that led them to board the vessel.
The local newspaper Reforma reported that the boat was intercepted by the Navy as it approached the waters near Topolobampo, in the municipality of Ahome.
The border between Mexico and Guatemala remains a crucial corridor on the migration route from Central and South America toward the United States, often involving risky journeys by land and sea.
