Mexican Mayor shot dead at public event in Michoacán

The mayor of Uruapan, a major city in western Michoacán state, was shot dead on Saturday during a public event, according to Mexican authorities. The killing underscores the worsening violence linked to organized crime in the region.

Officials confirmed that Carlos Manzo, mayor of Uruapan — a city of around 350,000 residents known for its avocado and citrus production — was attacked in the city center. The Public Security Secretariat announced that two suspects were arrested, while one assailant was killed during the confrontation.

Michoacán has long been plagued by drug cartels and extortion networks that target farmers and local businesses. Among the most active groups in the region are the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and La Nueva Familia Michoacana, both designated by the United States as foreign terrorist organizations.

The assassination of Carlos Manzo comes just days after the murder of Bernardo Bravo, a prominent lemon producer in Michoacán, who had repeatedly denounced extortion attempts against his trade association. The back-to-back killings highlight the deep insecurity affecting local officials and agricultural leaders in Mexico’s west.
