Melania Trump chairs UN meeting on children and education in conflict zones
U.S. First Lady Melania Trump chaired a United Nations Security Council meeting on Monday, focusing on the protection and education of children in conflict zones, two days after U.S. and Israeli military strikes on Iran prompted international concern.
This marked the first time a spouse of a serving world leader has led a Security Council session, highlighting a growing trend of personal involvement in foreign policy initiatives. The meeting, titled "Children, Technology, and Education in Conflict," emphasized the role of education in promoting tolerance and peace.
In her address, Trump stated, "The U.S. stands with all children throughout the world. I hope soon peace will be yours." Her office said the goal was to underline how access to education can mitigate the impact of conflict on young populations.
The meeting comes amid heightened regional tensions. Iran has blamed the U.S. and Israel for an attack on a girls' primary school in Minab, southern Iran, which reportedly resulted in the deaths of 165 schoolgirls, according to Iranian U.N. envoy Amir Saeid Iravani. Reuters could not independently verify these claims.
UNICEF representatives also highlighted the urgent need to protect children in areas affected by armed conflict and stressed that educational access remains a key factor in safeguarding future generations.
