Manchester synagogue attack: Police confirm one victim killed by officer’s bullet
Greater Manchester Police confirmed on Friday that one of the two people killed during Thursday’s attack on a synagogue in northern Manchester died as a result of police gunfire. Another victim who remains hospitalized was also found to have suffered a gunshot wound caused by officers.
The announcement adds complexity to the ongoing investigation, as initial findings show the suspect, identified as Jihad Al Shamie, did not carry a firearm. Police confirmed that only officers discharged their weapons during the Yom Kippur attack, which left multiple casualties and has been classified as a terrorist incident.
According to the police statement, the two victims struck by bullets were located behind the synagogue’s entrance at the time of the shooting. Authorities stressed that the case is being reviewed with “full transparency” and that independent oversight bodies will be involved.
The tragic events have shocked the local Jewish community, which had gathered for one of the holiest days in the calendar. Officials say security measures around places of worship across the UK have been reinforced in the aftermath of the attack.
