Major forest fire in Chernobyl exclusion zone after drone crash

A large forest fire has broken out in the Chernobyl exclusion zone in northern Ukraine following the crash of a drone, according to Ukrainian authorities, who stated that no increase in radiation levels has been detected so far.

The fire occurred within the restricted area surrounding the former Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, a heavily monitored region established after the 1986 nuclear disaster. The incident has raised concerns due to the sensitivity of the area, which remains contaminated and strictly controlled.

Local authorities reported that the fire began after a drone fell onto the territory of the Chernobyl reserve on Thursday. Firefighters were immediately deployed, but strong wind gusts have complicated containment efforts and slowed progress in bringing the blaze under control.

By Friday, the fire had spread across an estimated 1,100 hectares of forested land within the exclusion zone. Emergency teams continue to work under difficult conditions, using both ground and aerial support to limit the spread of flames.

Officials emphasized that continuous radiation monitoring has not shown any abnormal increase in levels in or around the affected area. However, specialists remain on alert due to the potential risk of radioactive particles being disturbed by fire activity.

The cause of the drone crash has not been fully clarified, and authorities have not confirmed whether it was related to military activity or technical failure. The region has experienced increased security concerns in recent years due to the broader conflict in Ukraine.
