Major Blaze Engulfs Kenitra’s Ben Abbad Flea Market
Kenitra, Morocco - A significant fire erupted on Saturday evening at the Ben Abbad flea market in Kenitra’s El Maamoura district, causing extensive damage to the bustling commercial hub. Initial reports indicate that the fire has devastated approximately 134 stalls, leaving the market in disarray.
Local authorities, security forces, and civil protection services responded swiftly to the emergency, arriving at the scene shortly after being notified. Their prompt intervention helped contain the blaze, although efforts to fully extinguish the fire are ongoing.
The cause of the fire remains undetermined, prompting authorities to launch an investigation under the supervision of the relevant public prosecutor. This incident follows a series of similar events across Morocco, highlighting the pressing concern of urban fires.
Earlier this month, a devastating fire at the Larbaa market in Casablanca’s Sbaata district caused significant damage, destroying around 24 shops. A judicial investigation has been initiated to uncover the circumstances surrounding this blaze.
Beyond urban fires, Morocco is also grappling with an increase in forest fire incidents, exacerbated by rising summer temperatures and drought conditions. In July, the National Agency for Water and Forests released updated data identifying regions most susceptible to wildfires, including new forecast maps to enhance national preparedness and prevention strategies.
According to the agency, Morocco experienced 182 wildfires in 2023, ravaging over 1,200 hectares of forest. The Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region was particularly affected, with 68 outbreaks burning 881 hectares, accounting for 70% of the country’s total forest fire damage.
The recent fire at the Ben Abbad flea market underscores the urgent need for comprehensive fire safety measures and improved emergency response protocols. As authorities continue their investigations, the focus remains on ensuring the safety of market vendors and the broader community.
