Macron urges restraint in Syria after deadly intercommunal violence
French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized the urgent need to prevent further violence in Syria following deadly intercommunal clashes in the southern region of the country that left over 1,300 people dead, the majority of whom were from the Druze community.
In a call with Syria’s interim president Ahmad al-Chareh on Saturday, July 26, Macron expressed deep concern over the recent violence and stressed the importance of accountability for those responsible.
"The recent violence in Syria highlights the extreme fragility of the ongoing transition. It is imperative to avoid a repeat of such events," Macron posted on X (formerly Twitter). He emphasized the need to protect civilians and encouraged a “calm and inclusive local dialogue” to support the unification of Syria in a manner that respects the rights of all its citizens.
The violence, which occurred between July 13 and July 20 in southern Syria, represents one of the deadliest episodes in the region since the beginning of the post-Assad transition period. France has consistently advocated for a peaceful resolution to the Syrian conflict and has supported efforts to stabilize the country through diplomacy and humanitarian support.
Macron's remarks come amid heightened international concern over the situation in Syria, as regional instability risks spilling over into neighboring countries. The French president reaffirmed France’s commitment to supporting a sovereign, united, and inclusive Syria.
