Macron in Sweden: Paris and Stockholm Seal a €4.3 Billion Frigate Deal

Emmanuel Macron is visiting Stockholm this Monday to officially sign a major defense contract with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson. Sweden will acquire four French frigates for €4.3 billion, an agreement that illustrates the acceleration of European rearmament and the strategic rapprochement between the two countries.

A Major Order for Naval Group

Emmanuel Macron's visit to Sweden comes at a time when defense issues are increasingly prominent in European relations. The French president is set to attend, alongside Ulf Kristersson, the formalization of the contract for the acquisition of four French defense and intervention frigates.

Stockholm has chosen the FDI model developed by Naval Group. The first ship is scheduled for delivery in 2030, while the other three will follow according to the timeline specified in the contract.

With a value of €4.3 billion, this order represents one of the largest military contracts recently concluded by France with a European partner.

Stockholm Accelerates Its Military Effort

For Sweden, this acquisition is part of a profound transformation of its defense policy. The country has significantly increased its military investments since the onset of the war in Ukraine and its entry into NATO.

The purchase of these frigates is also a response to Stockholm's desire to develop its naval capabilities and strengthen its contribution to collective security within the Atlantic Alliance.

The choice of French equipment also reflects a desire to diversify European partnerships in the field of armaments.

An Intensifying Defense Relationship

The order for the frigates is not an isolated agreement between Paris and Stockholm. The two countries have recently increased exchanges in the defense sector.

Last December, France announced the acquisition of two GlobalEye airborne surveillance aircraft from the Swedish group Saab, for an amount exceeding €1 billion.

These two contracts thus outline a relationship increasingly based on industrial reciprocity: France purchases Swedish equipment while Stockholm turns to the French military industry.

Macron Advocates for a More Sovereign Europe

In Stockholm, Emmanuel Macron also intends to promote his vision of a Europe capable of strengthening its own defense capabilities.

The agreement with Sweden fits into this strategy of consolidating European capabilities, as countries on the continent seek to increase their military investments and reduce certain external dependencies.

For the Élysée, the contract is thus expected to contribute to European defense as well as to the strength of NATO's framework.

A Highly Symbolic Ceremony

The contract signing is set to take place aboard the Amiral Ronarc’h, a new French frigate that belongs precisely to the class chosen by Sweden.

This setting will provide a particularly symbolic dimension to the ceremony. Emmanuel Macron and Ulf Kristersson are also expected to hold a tête-à-tête before a meeting of the French president with King Carl XVI Gustaf and Crown Princess Victoria at the Royal Palace.

Beyond the industrial order, this visit aims to strengthen the bilateral relationship, which is expected to gain more weight in European security matters.

European Rearmament Shifts the Balance

The Franco-Swedish agreement also illustrates a broader trend: European countries are accelerating their military programs and seeking more cooperation between their defense industries.

For French industrialists, this movement represents a major opportunity. For European governments, it is a way to strengthen their capabilities while developing a more integrated industrial and technological base at the continental level.

With its four future French frigates, Sweden confirms that it intends to take an increasingly prominent role in the European and NATO defense framework.
