Lion king song dispute: composer sues comedian over parody joke

A legal dispute has emerged over a comedic parody of a well-known song from The Lion King, as composer Lebohan Morake files a lawsuit against comedian Learnmore Jonasi, seeking $27 million in damages.

The case centers on the iconic opening song “Circle of Life,” a globally recognized piece from the Disney film. Morake, a Grammy-winning composer credited with contributing to the early lyrics, alleges that a joke performed by Jonasi misrepresented the meaning of the song’s original lyrics and harmed the integrity of his work.

The controversy began when Jonasi, during an appearance on a podcast, humorously translated part of the song’s opening chant. His interpretation, presented as a joke, differed significantly from the original meaning, which celebrates the arrival of a king and conveys themes of unity and reverence.

According to the complaint, Morake argues that the parody crossed a line by distorting the cultural and artistic significance of the lyrics. He claims the comedian’s version undermines the authenticity of the composition and misleads audiences unfamiliar with its original language and meaning.

Jonasi, however, has defended his performance, stating that it was clearly intended as humor and part of a broader tradition of comedic reinterpretation. In public statements, he described the lawsuit as unfair and emphasized that comedy often sparks conversation rather than causing harm.

The situation gained further attention when the comedian reportedly received legal documents during a live performance, a moment later shared on social media.

The case raises broader questions about the limits of parody, artistic freedom, and the protection of intellectual property in the entertainment industry. Neither Disney nor other parties involved have publicly commented in detail on the dispute.
