Lebanon pledges stronger border controls to combat smuggling

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun pledged on Monday to strengthen border controls in Lebanon during a meeting with a delegation from the Bekaa Valley Industrialists Association. The initiative aims to curb smuggling, which negatively affects domestic production and consumption.

During the visit, President Aoun announced that authorities are working on the modernization of customs scanners and the reinforcement of border monitoring. In July, Finance Minister Yassine Jaber announced plans to install new scanners at the ports of Beirut and Tripoli, with operations expected to begin soon. The upgraded equipment will allow scanning of up to 60 containers per hour, compared to 40 previously.

Aoun emphasized the importance of the industrial sector as a key driver of the economy and committed to protecting national industry through necessary legislation. "Our goal is for our exports to match or even exceed our imports in the future," he stated. These measures are part of a broader reform plan proposed by the International Monetary Fund to combat corruption within Lebanon's financial system.
