Laâyoune Power Plant: A Pioneering Leap Towards Sustainable Hydrogen-Powered Energy in Africa

The Laâyoune power plant in Morocco is poised to make history as Africa's inaugural facility entirely powered by green hydrogen, marking a transformative moment in electricity production across the continent.

The 99 MW plant, currently reliant on heavy fuel oil, is slated for a groundbreaking transformation through the installation of three GE Vernova 6B gas turbines. This collaborative effort, forged under a new agreement between Morocco's National Office for Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE), Nareva Holding, and GE Vernova, is set to propel the plant to operate at 100% capacity on green hydrogen.

The ambitious initiative involves a comprehensive examination of the technical and economic feasibility of converting the plant's turbines to utilize green hydrogen, with a primary focus on meeting peak power demands.

Experts commend this collaborative project as a revolutionary stride in Morocco's energy transition, anticipating a substantial reduction in carbon emissions and a diversification of the national energy mix. In line with Morocco's ambitious target of achieving 52% renewable electricity by 2030, this pioneering pilot project could serve as a blueprint for similar green initiatives across the African continent.

"This groundbreaking hydrogen conversion underscores Morocco's unwavering commitment to sustainable energy solutions," affirmed an ONEE spokesperson. "As the first of its kind on the continent, it signifies the Kingdom's resolve to decarbonize the energy sector through the deployment of innovative technologies."

The CEO of Nareva Holding emphasized the Laâyoune project's significance in showcasing the potential of public-private partnerships to drive the clean energy transition in Africa. "By pooling our expertise, we can establish a greener, more resilient power system."

For GE Vernova, this venture stands as a pivotal moment for its hydrogen-capable turbines. The company's Vice President commented, "This project substantiates the adaptability of our technology, facilitating the energy transition in Morocco and beyond."
